Based in the Washington DC region, Emily Martin, of the Martin Family Band, carries on the tradition of playing, teaching and performing. Her styles include Old Time Appalachian traditional music and Irish music on the mandolin, mountain dulcimer, tenor banjo and voice. She apprenticed with Brendan Mulvihill and performed with him since 2019, including his last two concerts in 2024. Brendan’s passion for music extended to Old Time music and song and he enjoyed hearing the Old Time versions and variations of Irish tunes. Emily will share some of those.
Step into the rich musical heritage of early American folk traditions during this Old Time Repertoire class. We'll explore classic fiddle tunes passed down through generations, focusing on melody, rhythm, learning by ear and how to play with others in a jam setting. Students will deepen their understanding of the cultural roots and regional styles that define American old time music. This one session, mini-class will introduce a mix of popular and obscure tunes to add to your repertoire. Perfect for fiddlers, banjo players, guitarists, mandolinists, and anyone eager to expand their tune list.
